Films Of Craft

 Collaborative Multimedia Portfolio

‘Films of Craft and the Craft of Films’ is an ongoing portfolio of film, video and written research for my MA in filmmaking at the School of Digital Arts in Manchester (MMU).

The project and research has developed greatly over its two year span, consisting of many creative, practice-lead and performative research componants as well as practical artistic summaries of the research.

‘Films of Craft and The Craft of Films’ focus is on the forgotten world of practical and heritage craft, using the camera lens to explore the meaning of the term ‘craft’ and its limits, comparisons to the definition of ‘art’ and the application of both of these definitions to my own practice of filmmaking.

This portfolio collaborates with and studies green woodworkers, weavers, toolmakers and ropemakers,  amongst others, to reach its outcomes and definitions.

Not all of the media is available online, or worth watching, but some sections are. The first component is titled ‘The Spoon’ and has it’s own dedicated page on this website. You can visit it here.

Another componant of the portfolio concerns the Sheffield-based toolmaking workshop of Robin Wood, and consits of a collection called ‘The Workshop Shorts’ designed to be viewed on mobile devices,  and thus shot, on the whole, in portrait orinetation.

You can explore this collection here and read more about Robin Wood here.

The culmination of this portfolio will take the form of a larger scale film exploring the work of Hungarian craftswoman Hanna Varga.

Nuala Fowler and I recently completed a seperate project with Hanna, creating a short introductary video about her and her upcoming land art project ‘The Wild Umbillical Cord’. The video will be used as part of a cowdfunding bid.

If you want to know more about Hanna’s work you can visit her website here.
